Building the Next Generation of Electricians

At Westphal & Company, investing in the next generation of electricians is not just a workforce strategy, it’s part of who we are.

Kyle Sutter, Vice President of Operations, has seen that impact firsthand. Having started as an apprentice himself over 25 years ago, Kyle worked his way through the field before moving into a leadership role, where he now helps oversee apprenticeship training and workforce development efforts across the company.

Today, that commitment continues through Westphal’s involvement in youth apprenticeship programs. These programs give students an early opportunity to explore the trades, gain hands-on experience, and determine if a career in electrical construction is the right fit for them.

For many, it becomes exactly that.

A Path That Starts Early

One of the most meaningful examples comes from within Westphal’s own history. A former youth apprentice, now a fifth-generation electrician with the company, recently completed his apprenticeship and is stepping into a journeyman role. It is a full-circle moment that highlights the long-term impact of investing in people early.

“These programs give students a chance to figure out if the trades are what they want to do,” Kyle shared. “We’ve had a lot of success helping them transition into registered apprenticeships and long-term careers.”

More Than Technical Training

Beyond technical training, the program also introduces students to the broader opportunities within the industry. From structured apprenticeship programs to ongoing field and technology training, Westphal continues to build an environment where individuals can grow, develop leadership skills, and build lasting careers.

It also reflects a larger need across the industry.

As demand for skilled labor continues to grow, creating clear pathways into the trades has never been more important. Through partnerships with schools, mentorship opportunities, and hands-on training, Westphal is helping ensure that the next generation is prepared, supported, and ready to lead.

Investing in What Comes Next

For Kyle, it is one of the most rewarding parts of his role.

“It’s one of my favorite things that I do, meeting with students and their families and helping them understand what this career can offer.”

At its core, the youth apprenticeship program is about more than training. It is about creating opportunity, strengthening communities, and continuing a legacy that has been built over generations.

For those interested in building a career in the trades, Westphal offers a path to learn, grow, and be part of something long-standing. Explore current opportunities on our careers page or learn more about our history and what it means to be part of the team.
