For Westphal & Company team member Lorene Gomez, that is how she will always remember him.
Their families first met in Chicago, where Lorene’s grandmother lived in the same building as Michael’s family. Over the years, what began as a childhood connection became a lifelong friendship — one that gave Lorene a front-row seat to the person Michael was long before he became President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County.
As Michael’s influence grew, Lorene says one thing never changed.
“He lived intentionally and unapologetically,” she said.
Whether he was advocating for young people, mentoring future leaders, or supporting families through difficult moments, Michael led with purpose. He believed leadership wasn’t about recognition — it was about showing up, asking the right questions, and making decisions that would create a better future for others.
“He wasn’t defined by titles or accolades,” Lorene reflected. “He was defined by his ability to empower people.”

He championed opportunities for underserved youth, challenged others to think bigger, and inspired people across the community to invest in the next generation. His leadership extended far beyond the walls of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, touching countless lives through his compassion, vision, and unwavering belief in people.
For Lorene, some of the memories that stand out most aren’t tied to public achievements. They’re the quieter moments that reflected Michael’s character. The way he noticed when someone needed support, stepped in without being asked, and made people feel seen.
She remembers him as a mentor, a visionary, and, above all, a friend.
“He didn’t follow the path,” she said. “He went where there was no path, went first to lead the way.”
