Flood Light Lighting Installation

Where to Install Motion Flood Lighting

Motion-triggered floodlights are a good option to improve your home’s security and our Westphal team can help you with the wiring and installation process.

Many off-the-shelf security systems offer an option for floodlights with smart controls that can be paired with outdoor security cameras. The placement of floodlights around the exterior of your home matters greatly since it must balance security and aesthetics. With a well-designed system, floodlights will improve safety but remember that they can also showcase the architectural features of your home.

  1. Entry Points and Access Areas

This will be the most obvious location when installing floodlights. Focus on entry points such as doors, windows, and pathways. Illuminating these areas will help you eliminate dark corners and discourage unauthorized access. Most often we will recommend floodlight installation above front and back doors, garage doors, and along walkways to create a well-lit and secure environment.

  2. Motion Sensor Placement

Our team will recommend the best placement of motion-triggered sensors.  The installation usually focuses on the areas where they can effectively detect movement, such as driveways, entryways, and backyard access points. We will ensure that the sensor’s field of view is unobstructed and adjust sensitivity settings to avoid false activations from small animals or passing cars.

  3. Landscaping Enhancement

Floodlights play a dual role, and they can often highlight the beauty of your landscaping. Position lights strategically to help illuminate trees, shrubs, and other features, creating a visually appealing nighttime atmosphere. Excessive brightness may disturb neighbors; so opt for a gentle glow that enhances the overall curb appeal of your home.

  4. Elevation and Angles

Consider the elevation and angles at which floodlights are installed. Mount them at a height that provides broad coverage while minimizing shadows. Angle the lights downward to illuminate the ground effectively without causing glare.

  5. Dark Corners and Blind Spots

Identify and address dark corners and blind spots on your property. If you are using cameras, it might be best to place the motion-triggered floodlight in the spot where it will improve visibility. If your lights point directly at your camera locations, we recommend repositioning them to enhance security.

  6. Balancing Light Intensity

Achieve a balanced distribution of light intensity throughout your property. Avoid creating stark contrasts between brightly lit areas and dark zones.  Your house may have improved security but you have to be sure that each time you come into the driveway you don’t trigger lights that shine directly into the windows of your neighbors.

  7. Integration with Existing Lighting

Coordinate floodlight installation with existing outdoor lighting fixtures. This ensures a cohesive and harmonious lighting design. Choose floodlights with a color temperature that complements the existing lighting to create a unified and attractive nighttime ambiance.

  8. Professional Installation

While some homeowners may choose the DIY route, professional service by our Westphal electricians ensures that the installation is performed up to code.  Running wire to all new locations should be left to a licensed professional, especially when you’re adding new breakers in the box.

Motion-triggered lights will help with your home security and can even improve curb appeal. With any exterior lighting always focus on entry points, landscaping, motion sensor placement, and balancing light intensity to create an evenly lit space and not disturb the homeowners around you.
