Safety Specialist (Dubuque, IA)

Position Summary 

The Safety Specialist is responsible for all aspects of the Westphal & Co. Inc. Safety and Health Program for both Westphal Electric and Globalcom Technologies. This role focuses on implementing and enforcing company safety policies to maintain a safe and productive work environment. The Safety Specialist reports directly to the Safety Director and supports proactive safety initiatives across all job sites.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Implement and enforce company safety policies and procedures

  • Conduct new hire safety training orientations

  • Maintain and file safety documentation, including toolbox talks, monthly trainings, equipment inspections, safety permits, and related records

  • Organize, maintain, and distribute PPE, including fall protection and arc flash equipment

  • Respond to PPE requests from field personnel

  • Assist with and conduct company safety training programs

  • Assist with accident investigations, inspections, and reporting

  • Develop, write, and maintain project-specific safety plans

  • Conduct job site safety visits and produce site safety reports

  • Conduct, record, and maintain OSHA-required safety training documentation

  • Manage annual man lift inspections, certifications, and documentation

  • Maintain chemical inventories and report new chemicals for MSDS updates

  • Travel to job sites as required

  • Assist with maintaining safety equipment inventory across all company branches

  • Assist with distribution of OSHA-required weekly toolbox talks

  • Maintain employee training matrices and track future training needs

  • Inspect job sites and collect safety condition data

  • Identify productivity concerns and safety-related issues

  • Attend safety seminars and regulatory update classes

  • Work with the Safety Director to research leading indicators and enhance proactive safety measures

  • Assist in developing creative safety programs to promote safety as a core company value

  • Support the Safety Director in managing safety award program inventory

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Safety Representative on construction projects

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Occupational Environmental Safety & Health (OESH) or Construction

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction Certification

  • BCSP designation or certification

Working Conditions

Environment:
Professional office environment. Climate-controlled workspace with ergonomic workstation setup.

Schedule:
Full-time, Monday – Friday w/in standard business hours. Extended hours required per the business need.

Physical Demands:
Primarily sedentary work involving extended periods of computer use and detailed data analysis. Occasional lifting of files or materials up to 20 pounds. Occasional requirement to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Travel required

Technology:
Extensive use of software systems, Accubid, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel and Word) and various online compliance portals. Must be comfortable learning and adapting to new technology systems
